How to Detox with Green Tea + 3 Cleansing Drinks

Detoxing with green tea is a great idea, but you have to do it right or it could start working against you. Here are some tips for drinking green tea each day, as well as three delicious recipes that use green tea as a base to build from.

Our cleansing drinks made with green tea will keep you hydrated and well-nourished. They’re loaded up with powerful antioxidants and the necessary enzymes and minerals that are lost during the hottest months.

We’ve all heard at some point about the detox powers of green tea. This Asian elixir in all its forms, from tea bags to sencha and matcha powder, is an antioxidant powerhouse, stimulating the natural detox function of your body’s cells.

I always advise everyone to check the information they find on health sites, and the idea of drinking lots of green tea is one of them. The tannins in green tea increase the acid production in the stomach. So while it is true that green tea is a powerful detox ally, in order to maintain a healthy digestive system you should restrict its consumption to one or two cups per day.

As we’ve seen, despite the long-lasting trend, drinking green tea in excess can damage the gastric mucosa, as Dr. Hiromi Shinya stated in the book ” The Enzyme Factor”. So combining it with healthy, enzyme-rich ingredients like fresh fruits is a great way to use it while providing the enzymes your body needs to process the tea.

When it comes to its detox powers, you can definitely call green tea a superfood. The least processed among other teas, it keeps most of its nutrients intact. Loaded with antioxidants (especially flavonoids and polyphenols, in the form of catechins), antiviral phytonutrients and a small amount of minerals, green tea has beneficial effects for our general health. It also helps fight cancer, especially breast, prostate and colon cancers, coronary diseases, diabetes, obesity and dementia.

I love to combine different ingredients to create more nutritious and detoxifying drinks, and these three are definitely my favorite. Each one is a new way to enjoy green tea and enhances its flavor as well as its nutrient content.

Berries were an easy idea to come up with, since they’re also rich in antioxidants and also contain fiber that is essential while doing a detox. I like to use mixed berries to get a larger range of nutrients and also to provide more depth of flavor.

The second concoction includes cucumber, which is deeply hydrating and works perfectly with the green tea. The cucumber provides extra minerals and the body can put them to work right away since it’s a natural source and not a manufactured pill.

And the third one I made is really just fun to drink and perfect for summer. It’s loaded up with watermelon which as the name implies contains a lot of water which has been naturally filtered by the fruit and is cleansing to the body. It also has its amazing flavor that is synonymous with summer, and is sweet enough to knock out any sweet cravings.

Bottoms up!
